So I just got word that I have $200 to spend outright on something for my classroom. I tried to crawl through my brain and remember things I had once wished for, but I drew a blank. Once I overcame my blankness I realized that putting this to my PLN will generate a lot more ideas. Can you help me? I would really like to add some kind of piece of tech., but realize that $200 doesn't go all that far (p.s. my class has: 1 TV, 3 ancient computers, and an overhead).

ReplyDeleteDo you have access to computers that have Photo Story 3 on them?(Free program) If so I would buy digital cameras and your students could start creating digital stories throughout the year. (Great for literacy building- reading fluency, writing, and speaking)
ReplyDeleteIf you don't have Photo Story then you can use many of the free digital storytelling web tools.
Other thoughts: mics for creating podcasts, webcam for skyping, digital voice recorders for recording interviews...

ReplyDeleteCan have them listen and watch video, create videos, take pictures, access web (if you have wireless), and use apps to practice. Even some apps for teachers.

ReplyDeleteSo I would suggest using the money on magazine subscriptions. You could have 5- 20 publications specifically about the subject(s) you teach about mailed to your class or front door. Only would this keep YOU up to date, but you now have a plethora of reading materials and images for your students at your disposal.
All US states test a student's ability to read informational texts. Articles from magazines are perfect practice.
Also, buy some FUN magazine for the kids: maybe a gossip magazine full of Justin Bieber and the actors from Twilight, and also a video game magazine. Remember, it doesn't matter WHAT students read, it just matters that they read.
